Young Sperm Whale Stranded on Miami Beach in 2025

Marine biologists are working to figure out why a young sperm whale ended up stranded on a Miami beach early Tuesday morning.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the whale was still alive when it washed up but had to be humanely euthanized shortly afterward.

The Stranding

A video shared by Only in Dade shows the moment the whale washed ashore. The animal was about 13 feet long and was later taken to NOAA’s lab in Miami for a necropsy to help determine what caused the stranding.

NOAA officials explained that marine mammals, like this whale, often end up on the beach when something is wrong. This could be due to illness, injury, or, in some cases like this one, being separated from their mothers and unable to survive alone.
