In 1937, he introduced the conga line at the Park Avenue Restaurant in Miami Beach, forever changing the city’s entertainment culture. In 2024, Miami Beach honored Arnaz with a permanent marker in Collins Park to acknowledge his contributions to the city’s cultural scene. The spot where the Park Avenue Restaurant once stood is now home to the Miami City Ballet.
Desilu and the Birth of Modern TV
Arnaz wasn’t just a musician; he also revolutionized television. His success with I Love Lucy, alongside Lucille Ball, led to groundbreaking changes in the television industry. Throughout his career, Arnaz remained connected to Miami. Even after moving to California, he came back to the city that shaped him. In 1982, he returned to serve as the king of the first Carnaval Miami, performing alongside his children, Lucie and Desi Jr., before a crowd of 35,000. Arnaz never forgot Miami, always returning to celebrate the milestones of his life.
His Lasting Legacy
Though Arnaz passed away in 1986, his impact on TV and music still resonates today. His daughter, Lucie Arnaz, often speaks about his work ethic and fearlessness. In an interview, she said, “He had a lot of moxie and integrity because he had to keep on going. He had to start over, and he had to build everything again. He was fearless.”
